Superior Donuts is a warm, funny, and deeply human comedy-drama by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Tracy Letts that explores the fault lines of modern urban America. Set in a struggling donut shop in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood, the play follows a weary former activist whose once-vibrant ideals have faded along with his business. When a bright, ambitious young Black writer arrives looking for work, the two men form an unlikely friendship that becomes the heart of the story.

Through their relationship, Superior Donuts examines a range of pressing social issues, including race, economic inequality, gentrification, immigration, violence, and the widening gap between generations. As one clings to the past and another fights to build a future, the donut shop becomes a microcosm of a changing city, where longtime residents, newcomers, dreamers, and strivers collide. Financial hardship and neighborhood tensions threaten not only the business, but also the fragile sense of community it represents.

Balancing sharp humor with emotional depth, Superior Donuts is both an intimate character study and a larger reflection on who gets left behind in an America shaped by shifting neighborhoods, systemic inequities, and the search for belonging.
