Authenticity Theater is excited to present our new Dramatic Reading series featuring powerful plays presented by stellar actors in an intimate, comfortable setting.

August 8th at 8pm, experience the latest work from Pulitzer Prize winning author John Patrick Shanley: Brooklyn Laundry.  In this touching story, Fran is a pessimist who’s terrified of making decisions. Owen is a guy who sees life for what it is and finds ways to make the best of it. Both of them are lonely, and find in each other what could be a meaningful connection. But when Fran’s sisters need her more than ever, she is faced with the most difficult choice she’s ever had to make. Brooklyn Laundry is about romance, family, joy and responsibility. Most of all, it’s a play about choosing to love and be loved.

August 22nd at 8pm we present Red by John Logan. Master abstract expressionist Mark Rothko has just landed the biggest commission in the history of modern art, a series of murals for New York’s famed Four Seasons Restaurant. In the two fascinating years that follow, Rothko works feverishly with his young assistant, Ken, in his studio on the Bowery. In this critically-beloved, Tony Award-winning play, Rothko and Ken debate the nature of art and success, as well as the temperament needed to create masterpieces that will stand the test of time. But when Ken gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also become his undoing.

Authenticity Theater opens a new chapter in adding sketch comedy to our lineup of productions!

Directed by Bruce Gibson, our debut of A Little Sketchy brings a solid group of hilarious sketch players together for a night of laughs.

Superior Donuts is a warm, funny, and deeply human comedy-drama by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Tracy Letts that explores the fault lines of modern urban America. Set in a struggling donut shop in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood, the play follows a weary former activist whose once-vibrant ideals have faded along with his business. When a bright, ambitious young Black writer arrives looking for work, the two men form an unlikely friendship that becomes the heart of the story.

Through their relationship, Superior Donuts examines a range of pressing social issues, including race, economic inequality, gentrification, immigration, violence, and the widening gap between generations. As one clings to the past and another fights to build a future, the donut shop becomes a microcosm of a changing city, where longtime residents, newcomers, dreamers, and strivers collide. Financial hardship and neighborhood tensions threaten not only the business, but also the fragile sense of community it represents.

Balancing sharp humor with emotional depth, Superior Donuts is both an intimate character study and a larger reflection on who gets left behind in an America shaped by shifting neighborhoods, systemic inequities, and the search for belonging. With wit, compassion, and honesty, Letts creates a moving portrait of friendship, resilience, and the hope of redemption in a divided world.
